Congo River boat collision leaves conflicting death tolls as search continues
Reports from Équateur province agree that two boats collided near Ngombe-Lukolela, but official figures relayed to AP, Reuters and Congo's state news agency differ sharply on deaths, survivors and people aboard.
Two boats collided at night near Ngombe-Lukolela
Two passenger and commercial boats collided on the Congo River near Ngombe-Lukolela in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Équateur province during the night of October 3–4. Local Radio Okapi reported the collision on October 4 while rescue work was still underway and before provincial authorities had issued a formal toll. [4][1][3]
The accounts agree that one vessel sank, survivors were helped by nearby residents and river users, and searches continued. They do not agree on the exact time, routes, manifest or number of people affected, so this report does not combine the figures into one total. [4][1][2][3]
The reported tolls are materially different
AP reported that provincial Interior Minister Crispin Mputu said at least 30 people had died and been buried and that dozens remained missing. Reuters reported a different account from the minister: at least 22 bodies recovered and buried, 59 people rescued and 163 aboard. Those reports also described different origin and destination details for the vessels. [1][2]
The Congolese state news agency ACP published a lower provisional toll attributed to the same provincial office: about 10 dead, several missing and 57 survivors. It said the wooden HB Super Victoire, carrying about 100 people from Businga in Sud-Ubangi, capsized after colliding with the metal boat Dieu se cache, which had come from Kinshasa. [3]
Radio Okapi's earlier witness-based account said there were several missing and around 30 survivors but emphasized that no official cause or exact casualty figure had yet been announced. These snapshots were published at different points in a fluid recovery operation and should not be treated as interchangeable. [4]
Night navigation and missing safety data remain central
ACP reported that the provincial minister attributed the collision to nighttime navigation and a lack of signal lights. AP separately cited an unnamed security eyewitness who alleged that the boats were overloaded with goods. Neither account is a completed technical investigation, and no public passenger manifest, vessel inspection record or final enforcement finding was located. [3][1]
Radio Okapi said darkness complicated rescue work and that an investigation team was expected from Mbandaka. The river is a critical transport route for communities with limited alternatives, making the eventual manifest, operator compliance and rescue-capacity record as important as the final toll. [4][3]
How the sources compare
| Source | What it adds | Scope or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Press · English | The highest reviewed toll, a missing-person estimate and a witness allegation about cargo loading. | The 30-death figure and route details conflict with Reuters and ACP; the overloading claim comes from an unnamed witness. |
| Reuters · English | A 163-person manifest figure, 22 recovered bodies, 59 rescues and detailed but differing route and timing information. | The account is attributed to the provincial minister and remains provisional; the accessible link is a licensed Reuters republication. |
| Agence Congolaise de Presse · French | Named vessels, an approximately 100-person load, 57 survivors and the minister's initial explanation involving night travel and absent lights. | ACP is the state news agency, and its approximately 10-death provisional toll conflicts with later international reports. |
| Radio Okapi · French | The earliest local account, rescue conditions and a clear warning that the figures and cause were not yet official. | Its survivor estimate came from one witness before authorities issued a consolidated account. |
What remains unclear
There is no reviewed consolidated passenger manifest or final official toll.
The exact departure points, destinations and collision time differ across AP, Reuters and ACP accounts.
No completed investigation establishes overloading, lighting failures or operator responsibility.
The number and identities of people still missing remain unsettled.

Updates & corrections
- — Initial report preserves the separate AP, Reuters, ACP and Radio Okapi casualty and survivor figures rather than creating a false combined total.
