Police confirmed an arrest but did not name the journalist

Hong Kong's national-security police said they arrested a 37-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman on September 30 on suspicion of committing an act with seditious intention. Police did not name either person. AP and HK01 identified them as Boom News founder Tang Ho-wing and activist Lee Ying-chi. That identification comes from reporting, not the official statement. [1][2][3]

Police connected the investigation to flowers and messages left at Prince Edward station on August 31 and alleged that false information and hateful or defamatory wording incited hatred against the government and police. The statement does not specify the particular words, images or acts attributed to Tang. Arrest on suspicion is not a charge or conviction. [1][2][3]

Press groups say livestreaming may be at the center of the case

The Hong Kong Journalists Association said this is the first publicly known arrest of a journalist for alleged sedition under the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. It asked whether the case concerns Tang's reporting or livestreaming. AP says Boom News has about 66,000 Instagram followers and covered the memorial live. [2][3][4]

CPJ and Reporters Without Borders called for Tang's release. Those are advocacy positions, not findings about the evidence. Police say national-security laws are necessary for stability and rights remain protected. [4][5][1][2]

No charging document or court ruling was available

Police said six people arrested earlier in September had been released on bail, while the latest two remained in custody when its October 1 statement was issued. A first conviction under the 2024 provision can carry up to seven years in prison, but that is a statutory maximum, not a sentence imposed on Tang. [1][2]

HK01's Traditional Chinese report was reviewed in the original and summarized in English. Because police and newsrooms describe different parts of the case, this article does not infer that ordinary memorial coverage itself is the act authorities allege. [3][1][2]
