Nepal's Budhi Gandaki flood leaves five missing and forces evacuations

A landslide temporarily blocked Nepal's Budhi Gandaki River before the natural dam failed, leaving five people missing, damaging homes and bridges and prompting downstream evacuations. Rescue and damage totals differ by reporting cutoff.

A landslide dam failed and sent water downstream

A landslide in Chumnubri, in Nepal's Gorkha district, blocked the Budhi Gandaki River before the temporary dam breached on October 11. Reuters and the Associated Press reported that the resulting flash flood swept through downstream settlements and damaged transport and power infrastructure. Authorities warned communities farther south in Gorkha and neighboring districts to move away from the river. [1][2][3]

Five people—two women and three men—were missing at the latest common cutoff used by Reuters and AP. They are not counted as dead. Reuters and AP each reported 49 people rescued by Sunday afternoon, while Kantipur's earlier Nepali-language update reported 47; those are successive operational snapshots rather than figures that can be added together. [1][2][3]

Damage counts differ by scope and publication time

Reuters reported roughly a dozen houses, two suspension bridges, a highway bridge and a hydropower-project camp damaged or washed away. AP described approximately three dozen houses, four bridges, a hydropower construction site and power and communications towers damaged. The reports may be counting different locations or later assessments, so this article preserves both instead of merging them into one total. [1][2]

Kantipur reported that 387 security personnel and four helicopters were mobilized, that more than 20 homes remained at risk and that a technical team planned a drone survey. Its account also described a proposed temporary bridge assessment. Those operational details come from Nepali authorities cited by the local newsroom and do not yet establish a final reconstruction timetable. [3][4]

The immediate risks extend beyond the first impact zone

Warnings were issued for river communities in Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan and East and West Nawalparasi. The loss of bridges and damage to the hydropower work site can isolate residents from food, health care, power and safe travel even where buildings remain standing. The reviewed reports did not provide a complete evacuation or shelter count. [1][2][4]

AP placed the disaster in the context of Nepal's deadly August floods and a multibillion-dollar recovery effort. That background shows the strain on public infrastructure, but the August toll is not part of the Budhi Gandaki casualty count. The present priorities are finding the missing, maintaining downstream warnings and restoring safe access. [2]

How the sources compare

SourceWhat it addsScope or limitation
Reuters · EnglishThe five-person missing count, later 49-person rescue figure, downstream warnings and a focused damage inventory. Its roughly dozen-house estimate is narrower than AP's later or broader count, and the cause and final losses remain under investigation.
Associated Press · EnglishThe breach sequence, later rescue count, broader damage inventory and national recovery context. The casualty and damage information comes primarily from Nepali authorities and remained provisional.
Kantipur · NepaliLocal operational detail on the 47-person rescue cutoff, security deployment, helicopters and threatened homes. Its earlier rescue figure and infrastructure inventory should not be combined mechanically with later international reports.
Radio Nepal · EnglishPublic-service reporting on local response and the downstream emergency.Personnel figures differed from Kantipur's cutoff and are not used as a single final deployment count.

What remains unclear

Whether the five missing people will be found and whether the casualty count will change.

The final number of damaged or uninhabitable homes, bridges and utility sites.

How many people were evacuated or require shelter, food, medical care or replacement transport access.

The precise landslide trigger and whether further slope or river blockage failures remain likely.
