Three children and a teacher were killed

A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, killing three students ages 5, 8 and 11 and one teacher, according to Bend police. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically wounded and taken to a hospital. Officials had not publicly identified the victims at the reviewed cutoff. [1][3][4]

Police said the first 911 call came at 12:59 p.m. after shots were fired into a car near the school. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and entered while the building was locked down. The attacker fired through locked doors to get inside, according to police and reporting from Oregon Public Broadcasting. [1][5]

Police say a community member followed and shot the attacker

Bend police said a community member who saw the teenager enter the school followed him inside and fatally shot him. Police did not identify that person, describe the precise sequence of the confrontation or announce whether the shooting by the community member was under separate legal review. The police account is the only reviewed official description of how the attacker died. [1][3][4]

Authorities had not announced a motive or any relationship between the attacker and the school. AP reported, through an unnamed law-enforcement official, that the pump-action shotgun used in the attack had been legally purchased by the teenager's mother. That detail is attributed reporting, not a public finding about storage, access or legal responsibility. [3][4]

Families reunited as the district closed schools

OPB reported that families waited for information and were reunited with children away from the school while officers searched the campus. Bend-La Pine Schools canceled Friday classes, sports and activities across its 32 schools and said crisis support would be available. These closures and services affect students and staff districtwide, not only those at Silver Rail. [5][2]

Oregon emergency officials asked the public to avoid spreading unverified information and directed affected people to local crisis resources. The request is especially important while police are still notifying families and investigating the attacker’s actions, weapon access and path into the school. [2][1]
