West Bank olive-harvest attacks kill one and wound 16 as journalist is beaten
Palestinian officials say settler gunfire near Burqa killed officer Ali Hassan Yasser al-Bazzari and wounded 16 people. AFP separately documented settlers beating and robbing one of its photographers during harvest coverage near Aqraba.
October 6–7: one Palestinian killed, 16 wounded and an AFP photographer hospitalized
Palestinian officials said Israeli settlers opened fire on olive harvesters near Burqa on October 7, killing Palestinian National Security Forces officer Ali Hassan Yasser al-Bazzari, 44, after he responded to the attack, and wounding 16 people. AP reported the casualty count and said a village council member alleged the Israeli military delayed emergency responders for more than an hour. The military said troops entered after a report that an Israeli civilian had been injured by a rock and that several Palestinians were detained for questioning; the military and police did not answer AP's questions about whether the shooter had been arrested. [1][3]
In a separate October 6 incident near Aqraba, AFP said armed settlers beat its photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh with rifle butts, took his camera equipment and threatened colleague John Wessels at gunpoint. Ashtiyeh was hospitalized with head and torso bruising. AFP said Israeli soldiers were visible about 500 metres away and did not intervene; the agency sought an Israeli military response, and no reviewed response resolved that account. Al Jazeera Arabic reported the attack in Arabic and linked it to a wider day of raids and settler violence. [2][4]
AP reported a second October 7 attack near Marda in which settlers chased harvesters into a house and soldiers later used tear gas and detained three people, according to a former village council head. Palestinian officials told AP that five Palestinians had been killed and more than 100 injured in attacks during the week. Those are multi-incident totals from Palestinian officials and are not merged with the Burqa figures or treated as police findings. [1]
Soldiers disperse harvesters near Beita
Video obtained by the Associated Press showed Israeli soldiers firing into the air and using tear gas as Palestinian farmers and supporting activists tried to harvest olives in the northern West Bank. AP placed the incident near Beita, where Al Jazeera Arabic and the Palestinian news agency WAFA also reported that farmers were blocked while settlers were present in the area. [5][6][8]
The Israeli military told AP that troops responded to a reported confrontation and dispersed it. It said a security official had fired into the air earlier and that nobody was injured in that specific encounter. WAFA separately reported that soldiers detained several young men and solidarity activists; that detention account was not independently confirmed in the reviewed Israeli response. [5][8]
Reports describe a wider series of attacks, not one reconciled casualty count
Al Jazeera Arabic reported October 3 incidents in communities from the Nablus area to Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron and Jerusalem, citing its correspondents, local officials, WAFA and the Palestinian Red Crescent. Its reporters described at least 15 Palestinians injured across multiple locations, including five members of one family near Ramallah and five people treated after an attack near Sebastia. Those figures cover several events and should not be read as casualties from the Beita dispersal described by AP. [6]
On October 4, WAFA reported a separate allegation that settlers assaulted a farmer near Aqraba and stole harvested olives and equipment. This is a current local report based on Palestinian sources; the reviewed material did not contain police findings, arrests or a detailed Israeli response for that incident. [9]
The reported Area C rule is broader than the public documentation
AP reported that Israel imposed new rules this year prohibiting Palestinian harvesting in Area C, the part of the West Bank under full Israeli control. A September 21 report by the independent Palestinian Raya network described a narrower account circulating in Israeli media: restrictions on access to land Israel classifies as state land. Raya quoted an official from the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission saying that no new written instructions or maps had then appeared on the Israeli military or Civil Administration sites his office monitors. [5][7]
The Israeli Civil Administration's Agriculture Office says it coordinates olive-harvest seasons and supervises forests and tree-clearing licenses in Area C, but the reviewed government page does not publish the reported 2026 access rule. Until the operative order and maps are public, the report cannot establish whether the restriction covers all Area C farmland, only designated state land, areas near settlements or a different set of plots. [12][7][5]
Farmers organize around food, income and access to land
The Palestinian Agriculture Ministry describes the olive harvest as a pillar of food security and the agricultural economy. Before the current incidents, its Jenin office convened government, civil-society, emergency and volunteer groups to help farmers reach land near settlements, the separation barrier and other threatened areas and to document attacks. [11]
WAFA reported on October 4 that the national harvest campaign is forming local committees to coordinate access, record blocked routes and respond to emergencies. The arrangements show organized preparation for a hazardous season; they do not guarantee safe access or prove every allegation about individual attacks. [10][11]
How the sources compare
| Source | What it adds | Scope or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Associated Press, AFP and Al Jazeera Arabic · October 6–7 | The Burqa death and injury count, the Israeli military's limited response, a separately documented assault on two AFP journalists and Arabic reporting on the wider pattern. | The shooter had not been publicly identified or reported arrested, the ambulance-delay allegation was not independently adjudicated, and no reviewed Israeli response resolved AFP’s account. |
| Associated Press · English | Video-based reporting from the Beita area and the Israeli military's response that troops dispersed a confrontation and reported no injuries in that encounter. | AP's reference to a new Area C prohibition does not link the underlying written rule or maps, leaving the geographic scope unclear. |
| Al Jazeera Arabic · Arabic | Field reporting across several West Bank communities, location-specific allegations and an injury figure spanning multiple incidents. | The account combines different events and relies partly on Palestinian officials and local sources; it does not independently adjudicate responsibility in every location. |
| Raya Media Network · Arabic | A detailed check of the reported policy's scope and the absence, as of September 21, of new public instructions or maps on monitored Israeli official sites. | The report predates the October 2–3 enforcement incidents and quotes a Palestinian commission official interpreting Israeli media reports. |
| WAFA and Palestinian Agriculture Ministry · Arabic and English | Local incident reporting, the October 4 protection plan and primary Palestinian government preparations for farmer access and food-security needs. | WAFA is the Palestinian official news agency and the ministry is a government source; their claims about attacks and responsibility are not court or police findings. |
| Israeli Civil Administration · English | Official description of the Agriculture Office's Area C forestry, licensing and harvest-coordination responsibilities. | The reviewed page contains no event-specific response, 2026 access order or map capable of resolving the dispute over the new rule. |
What remains unclear
Who fired the fatal shots near Burqa, whether any suspect has been arrested, and whether authorities will publish investigative findings.
The complete written 2026 access instructions and maps, including whether they cover all Area C farmland or a narrower category of land, were not publicly located.
The total number of people injured, detained or denied access cannot be reconciled because reports cover different towns, dates and incident types.
No reviewed police record established arrests, charges or accountability for the reported settler attacks and thefts.
The eventual harvest loss and effect on household income, local food supply and exports will not be measurable until later in the season.
