Avery 5160 vs 8160: Laser or Inkjet Address Labels?

Avery made these labels the same physical size and put them on the same 30-per-sheet template. The purchase decision is not layout. Product 5160 is a 3,000-label pack for laser printers, while 8160 is a 750-label pack for inkjet printers.

Best for

Home offices, small businesses and households matching a common 1 x 2-5/8-inch permanent paper label to either a laser or inkjet printer.

Probably not for

Thermal label printers, removable labels, waterproof applications, clear labels, outdoor exposure or anyone who has not confirmed the printer technology and media instructions.

Avery 5160 Easy Peel Address Labels, 3,000 Count

A 100-sheet supply of matte white permanent paper labels for laser printers. Each sheet contains 30 labels measuring 1 x 2-5/8 inches and uses Avery 5160 template geometry.

Pros

  • Correct stock for monochrome or color laser printing
  • Three-thousand-label quantity supports recurring mail and filing jobs
  • Same familiar 30-per-sheet layout as 8160

Cons

  • Four times the label count and storage commitment of the 8160 pack
  • Not the correct stock for an inkjet printer
  • Permanent adhesive is a poor choice for temporary identification

Who it’s for: Choose 5160 when the printer is laser and a 3,000-label supply will be used. Skip it for an inkjet or for occasional work that does not justify 100 sheets.

Avery 8160 Easy Peel Address Labels, 750 Count

A 25-sheet supply of matte white permanent paper labels optimized for inkjet printers. It shares the 1 x 2-5/8-inch size and 30-per-sheet template geometry of Avery 5160.

Pros

  • Correct stock for an inkjet printer
  • Seven-hundred-fifty-label quantity is easier to finish and store for occasional use
  • Uses the same layout as common 5160 and 8160 templates

Cons

  • One-quarter the label count of the 5160 pack
  • Not the correct stock for a laser printer
  • Paper and permanent adhesive do not suit waterproof or removable jobs

Who it’s for: Choose 8160 when the printer is inkjet and 750 labels match the expected volume. Skip it for a laser printer or a high-volume workflow that will quickly consume 25 sheets.

Printer technology decides the product number

Avery directly compares 5160 and 8160 in its help documentation. Both are white address labels with the same dimensions and template, but 5160 is made for laser printers and 8160 is made for inkjet printers. That distinction should be resolved before pack size, design software or shipping needs.

Laser printers use heat during the fusing process, while inkjet printers place liquid ink onto the media. Avery formulates and tests label products for the specified printer type. A shared template only means the digital layout places text and graphics in the same locations. It does not make the physical sheets interchangeable between printer technologies.

Check the printer model and manual rather than guessing from the cartridge name. Some all-in-one machines are inkjets and others are laser devices. If a workplace has both, store the packs separately and leave the product number visible so the correct sheet reaches the correct paper tray.

The geometry is intentionally the same

Each label measures one inch by two and five-eighths inches, with 30 labels on a letter-size sheet. Avery identifies the template as shared between 5160 and 8160. An existing document created with either template number can therefore have the same label positions when opened for the other product.

Shared geometry does not guarantee perfect alignment on the first print. Printer margins, scaling, feed direction and software settings can move content. Print a plain-paper test at actual size, place it behind a label sheet against a bright window, and check every edge before using adhesive stock.

Disable options such as fit to page unless Avery or the printer instructions call for them. Load the sheet in the direction shown for the tray, use the recommended label or media setting, and avoid rerunning a partially used sheet if the printer maker warns against it. Exposed adhesive and missing labels can affect the paper path.

Pack quantity changes storage and reorder timing

Product 5160 contains 3,000 labels on 100 sheets. Product 8160 contains 750 labels on 25 sheets. Because both place 30 labels on each sheet, 5160 supplies four times as many sheets and labels. That favors repeated mailing, inventory and filing work on a laser printer.

The smaller 8160 pack is more practical when an inkjet handles occasional holiday cards, event labels or home organization. Buying more labels is not automatically better if the package occupies storage for years, collects moisture or becomes separated from its printer instructions.

Estimate volume in sheets, not only individual labels. A job using 120 addresses consumes four complete sheets if every position prints correctly. Add a modest setup allowance for alignment tests and design changes, but do not assume the Sure Feed name guarantees that every printer will feed every sheet without error.

Material and adhesive rule out some projects

Both exact products are matte white paper labels with permanent adhesive. They are intended for smooth surfaces such as envelopes, paper, cardboard, glass and metal within the manufacturer guidance. Permanent means they are not designed to lift cleanly whenever a temporary tag is no longer needed.

Paper labels are also not a substitute for waterproof film, freezer labels, outdoor identification or a durable shipping material exposed to abrasion. Ink and toner durability depend on the printer, handling and environment. Choose a product specifically documented for moisture, removal or unusual surfaces when the job requires it.

Either product can be handwritten when a printer is unnecessary. That does not erase the pack-level printer distinction for later printed use. Keep unused sheets flat, dry and in their original package, and avoid curling or damaging the leading edge that enters the printer.

Easy Peel and Sure Feed solve different problems

Easy Peel with Pop-up Edge is Avery terminology for the sheet-bending method that raises label edges for removal. It addresses application speed after printing. Sure Feed is the sheet feature intended to support more reliable printer feeding and reduce misalignment and jams.

Those features do not replace normal setup. Fan only when the printer instructions allow it, keep sheets free of bent corners, and use the correct tray. A printer that does not support labels or a sheet loaded in the wrong orientation can still misfeed.

Apply labels to a clean, dry surface and press across the full area. The product can only adhere to the surface it contacts. Textured cardboard, dust, oil and curved containers can change the result, so test the actual item when the label is doing more than routine envelope addressing.

Choose 5160 or 8160 in two steps

First, choose 5160 for a laser printer or 8160 for an inkjet printer. Second, confirm that the corresponding quantity makes sense: 3,000 labels for the laser pack and 750 for the inkjet pack. Do not reverse that order simply because one package appears to offer more labels.

Choose neither if the job needs removable adhesive, another size, weather resistance, clear material or a direct-thermal printer. Avery sells many products with similar dimensions and different materials, adhesives and printer compatibility. Match all of those fields, not only the template number.
