DEWALT DWE6423K vs Makita BO5041: Which 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander?

Both use 3-amp corded motors, 5-inch hook-and-loop abrasives and through-pad dust collection. DEWALT starts at 8,000 OPM in a compact palm-grip body; Makita extends the range down to 4,000 OPM and adds a trigger, lock-on control and adjustable front handle.

Best for

DIYers and woodworkers choosing a corded variable-speed 5-inch random orbit sander for surface preparation and finish sanding.

Probably not for

Dust-free work, wet sanding, polishing without approved accessories, removing hazardous coatings or replacing suitable respiratory and extraction controls.

DEWALT DWE6423K 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit

The DWE6423K is a 3-amp corded random orbit sander with a variable range of 8,000 to 12,000 orbits per minute. It uses a 5-inch hook-and-loop pad, a separate counterweight and rubber overmold grip. DEWALT emphasizes the short body for working closer to the surface. Its one-handed locking dust bag connects directly, and the dust port connects directly to DEWALT DWV010 and DWV012 collectors. Other vacuum hoses may need a compatible connector.

Pros

  • The compact palm-grip layout keeps the operator close to the sanding surface.
  • The locking dust bag and direct compatibility with specified DEWALT extractors create a clear collection path.

Cons

  • Its 8,000 OPM minimum is higher than the Makita model's 4,000 OPM minimum.
  • It does not provide the Makita model's adjustable front handle and trigger-lock layout.

Who it’s for: Choose it for a compact top-grip sander and an 8,000 to 12,000 OPM range. Skip it when a low 4,000 OPM setting or two-hand front grip is important.

Makita BO5041 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander

Makita equips the BO5041 with a 3-amp corded motor and a 4,000 to 12,000 OPM variable-speed dial. It uses 5-inch, eight-hole hook-and-loop abrasive discs and a 1/8-inch orbit. A two-finger trigger, lock-on button, rubberized palm grip and adjustable front handle offer several hand positions. The through-pad dust system feeds a dust bag and includes a built-in vacuum-port adapter. Makita lists net weight at 3.1 pounds.

Pros

  • The 4,000 to 12,000 OPM range gives a lower starting speed than the DEWALT.
  • An adjustable front handle, trigger and lock-on button support two-hand control and longer continuous passes.

Cons

  • The added front handle makes the tool less compact than a simple palm-grip body.
  • Vacuum fit still needs to be checked against the actual hose rather than assumed from the built-in port.

Who it’s for: Choose it for a wider speed range and adjustable second grip. Skip it when the shortest possible palm-style body is the priority.

The usable speed range is the clearest specification difference

Both tools top out at 12,000 OPM and use 3-amp motors, but their minimum settings differ. DEWALT specifies 8,000 OPM at the low end. Makita starts at 4,000 OPM. A lower setting can provide more control for a delicate coating, an unfamiliar abrasive or a task where excessive heat and aggressive cutting are concerns. It does not automatically make one finish smoother.

Abrasive grit, disc condition, pressure, dwell time, orbit pattern and material matter as much as dial position. Start with the material and finish manufacturer's instructions, let the abrasive do the cutting and keep the pad flat. Pressing harder is not a substitute for choosing the correct disc or speed.

Grip style changes how the tool is guided

The DWE6423K concentrates control in a short rubber-overmold palm-grip body. That can be useful on broad horizontal work or when a user wants to keep a hand close to the surface. The Makita adds a front handle that can be repositioned for corners and confined areas, plus a large trigger and lock-on button for continuous operation.

Neither layout is universally more comfortable. Hand size, working height and whether the surface is horizontal or vertical change the preference. A two-hand position can guide long passes, while a shorter body can feel less obstructive near edges. Take breaks and avoid using a grip style that encourages wrist bending or excessive downward pressure.

Dust bags help, but extraction and protection still matter

Both products pull dust through holes in the sanding pad. DEWALT documents a locking bag and direct connection to its DWV010 and DWV012 collectors. Makita documents a high-capacity bag and built-in vacuum-port adapter. Effective collection also depends on aligning an eight-hole disc, maintaining airflow and fitting the hose securely.

A dust bag does not capture every particle. Identify the coating and substrate before sanding. Lead paint, silica-containing material and some woods require controls beyond the included bag. Follow the abrasive, material and extraction instructions, use appropriate personal protective equipment and do not sand material whose hazards are unknown.

Compare the exact kit, pad and extractor connection

Choose DEWALT for the compact palm body and an 8,000 to 12,000 OPM workflow. Choose Makita for a 4,000 to 12,000 OPM range and adjustable front handle. This is a feature comparison based on current manufacturer documentation, not a claim that either was personally tested or removes material faster.

Confirm DWE6423K rather than a single-speed DWE6421 or cordless DCW210, and confirm BO5041 rather than the related BO5030 or BO5031. Check whether the listing includes a case, dust bag and pad, then verify abrasive hole pattern and vacuum adapters. For layout work before drilling or mounting, the stud-finder and laser-level comparisons cover separate workshop decisions.
