Park Tool IB-2 vs Crankbrothers M17: Adjustment Tool or Trail Repair Kit?

Park Tool packs ten adjustment tools into 108 grams. Crankbrothers adds a chain breaker, four spoke keys and open wrenches, increasing both capability and weight.

Best for

Cyclists matching a compact carry tool to the fasteners and repair plan on a specific bicycle.

Probably not for

Suspension service, high-torque workshop jobs, every chain standard, stripped fasteners or riders who have not checked their bicycle and spare-part compatibility.

Park Tool I-Beam Multi-Tool IB-2

A 10-function folding tool with eight metric hex sizes, a T25 driver and flat screwdriver in a 75-by-40-by-18-millimeter, 108-gram body.

Pros

  • Includes a 1.5-millimeter hex key that the M17 list omits
  • Sixty grams lighter and 14 millimeters shorter
  • Covers common brake, bar, saddle and derailleur adjustments

Cons

  • No chain breaker or spoke keys
  • No Phillips driver or open wrenches
  • Adjustment-focused set cannot address many roadside failures

Who it’s for: Choose IB-2 when the bicycle’s fasteners match its ten tools and the carry plan prioritizes low mass. Skip it when chain and spoke repair are expected parts of the field kit.

Crankbrothers M17 Gold Multi-Tool (10755)

A 17-function high-tensile-steel tool with seven metric hex sizes, two screwdrivers, T25, chain breaker, four spoke keys and 8/10-millimeter open wrenches.

Pros

  • Integrated chain tool supports manufacturer-listed 8- through 12-speed chains
  • Four spoke-key sizes expand wheel-repair capability
  • Adds Phillips and open-wrench functions

Cons

  • Weighs 168 grams, 60 grams more than IB-2
  • No 1.5-millimeter hex key
  • More functions require more compatibility checks and practiced technique

Who it’s for: Choose M17 when its chain tool, spoke keys and open wrenches match the bike and repair plan. Skip it when a lighter adjustment-only kit is sufficient or the chain standard is outside its stated range.

Build the tool list from the bicycle

Open the bicycle and component manuals and list the fasteners a rider may reasonably adjust away from home. Both tools include 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8-millimeter hex keys plus T25 and a flat driver. Park Tool also includes 1.5 millimeters; Crankbrothers adds Phillips #2 and 8/10-millimeter open wrenches.

A larger tool count is useful only when those interfaces exist on the bike and can be serviced safely in the field. Neither product includes tire levers, inflation, patches, a spare tube or a torque indicator. Treat the multi-tool as one component of a carry system, not a complete repair kit.

M17 adds chain and wheel functions

Crankbrothers states that the current M17 chain tool supports 8-, 9-, 10-, 11- and 12-speed chains. It also includes spoke wrenches numbered 0 through 3. Those additions can turn a chain problem or loose spoke into a repair opportunity when the user has the correct spare parts and knows the procedure.

Compatibility is not universal. Some chains require model-specific joining pins or reusable links, and spoke-key numbering must match the nipple. A badly damaged wheel, bent derailleur hanger or cracked component may be unsafe to ride. Learn on workshop parts first and carry the joining link specified for the exact chain.

IB-2 saves 60 grams and some space

IB-2 measures 75 by 40 by 18 millimeters and weighs 108 grams. M17 measures 89 by 43 by 19 millimeters and weighs 168 grams. The difference is 60 grams and 14 millimeters of length, with smaller changes in width and thickness. That can matter in a compact saddle bag already holding inflation and tire supplies.

Weight alone should not remove the tool that addresses a plausible failure. Conversely, carrying chain and spoke functions without the compatible parts or skill adds mass without completing the repair. Lay the entire kit on a scale and map each item to a task before choosing between the bodies.

Short handles limit torque and reach

Folding multi-tools trade leverage and access for portability. Open the needed key fully, seat it squarely and keep the tool aligned with the fastener. If the key twists, the head begins to round or the required torque exceeds comfortable control, stop. A damaged bolt in a remote location is harder to solve than an adjustment deferred to a workshop.

Neither manufacturer gives these products a torque scale. Carbon parts, stems, seatposts and brake components may have narrow torque requirements, so final assembly often needs a calibrated torque wrench. Use the multi-tool for appropriate roadside work and verify critical fasteners properly after returning home.

Practice makes the extra tools useful

Before a ride, unfold every implement and confirm that it reaches the relevant bolt without interference from a frame, rack or accessory. Practice removing and reinstalling a chain link on a spare chain, identify the correct spoke key, and make sure the Phillips and flat blades match the actual screws. Carry instructions if a repair is not yet familiar.

Keep the tool dry and inspect pivots, edges and the chain pin. Dirt can prevent a hex key from seating completely, and corrosion can make the folding body hard to control. A compact pouch keeps metal tools from abrading a tube or rattling against electronics in the same bag.

Choose adjustment coverage or repair breadth

Choose IB-2 for a lighter, shorter kit centered on common hex and T25 adjustments, especially if a 1.5-millimeter hex matters. Choose M17 when verified chain, spoke, Phillips and open-wrench functions justify the added weight. Neither one is the right answer until matched to the exact bicycle.
