Preply Review: What One-on-One Tutoring and the Subscription Include
Preply can make one-on-one language practice easy to schedule, but it is a recurring subscription tied to one tutor—not a marketplace for occasional one-off lessons.

How tutor matching works
Preply is a marketplace for live, one-on-one online lessons. Search results let you compare tutor profiles, languages, specialties, availability, prices, introduction videos, and student reviews. The platform is most useful when you filter for the actual goal—conversation, pronunciation, exam preparation, business use, reading, or beginner structure—instead of choosing only by price.
A good profile match is not automatically a good teaching match. Watch the introduction, read recent reviews for patterns, and send a short message describing your level, time zone, and goal. Ask what a normal lesson looks like and what the tutor expects between meetings. That makes the trial a real fit check rather than a generic chat.
The trial is a decision point
Preply currently offers trial lessons in 25- or 50-minute lengths. Use that time to test audio quality, pace, correction style, and whether the tutor can translate a broad goal into a plan. A charismatic introduction matters less than leaving with a clear sense of how future sessions will work.
If a completed trial is unsatisfactory, Preply’s help center describes a limited trial-replacement process, currently up to two replacements in qualifying situations. The subscription is tied to one tutor
After the trial, learning continues through a subscription associated with that tutor. The current help documentation describes a 28-day billing cycle and a minimum of four lessons per cycle. Working with a second tutor requires a separate subscription. Preply does not currently position the service as a one-off-lesson marketplace.
This structure rewards consistency. It can also become expensive or wasteful if your schedule changes frequently. Before subscribing, check the tutor’s future availability—not only the next open hour—and select a lesson pace you can realistically maintain.
Scheduling, cancellation and expiring lessons
Preply’s current policy says a lesson canceled with less than 12 hours’ notice is charged. Unscheduled lesson balance can expire at the end of a subscription cycle, although lessons booked for a later date are treated differently under the current rules. Policies can change, so use the live help center and your account calendar when moving lessons.
The safest habit is to book the cycle in advance, add calendar reminders, and communicate with the tutor early. If travel or work makes recurring sessions difficult, pause or adjust the subscription before the renewal deadline rather than accumulating a balance you may not use.
Who gets the most value from Preply
The platform fits someone who improves through real conversation, individualized correction, and accountability. It is especially useful when local tutor choice is limited or when a learner wants a teacher from a specific language community or time zone. The value comes from the tutor relationship, so quality can vary more than it would in one standardized course.
If you prefer independent study, combine a lower-cost app, textbook, or media routine with occasional conversation practice elsewhere.
