Why Antarctica Is the Largest Desert on Earth

Ice does not disqualify a landscape from being a desert. Antarctica stores enormous amounts of frozen water while receiving remarkably little new rain or snow.

A desert is defined by dryness, not heat

Laynie’s surprise in this reel comes from a familiar mental picture: deserts are hot, sandy places with camels and cacti. Heat is common in many famous deserts, but it is not the defining feature. A desert is a region that receives very little precipitation. Rain is precipitation, but so are snow, sleet, and other forms of water falling from the atmosphere.

That definition allows both hot deserts and cold deserts. The Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert. Antarctica, when polar deserts are counted, is the largest desert overall because it combines extreme aridity with a continental area larger than the Sahara.

How can a continent covered in ice be dry?

Antarctica holds an extraordinary amount of frozen water, but most of that ice accumulated over immense spans of time. NASA explains that the continent receives very little rain or snowfall; what does fall often remains instead of melting and running away. Layer after layer can therefore build a thick ice sheet even when each year contributes only a small amount.

The continent’s interior is especially dry. A U.S. Geological Survey map notes that annual precipitation across vast interior areas averages less than 10 centimeters—about four inches—of water-equivalent snowfall. NASA-supported research describes large regions of the East Antarctic Plateau receiving less than 100 millimeters of snow-water equivalent per year, with some areas below 50 millimeters.

Cold air helps create the polar desert

Very cold air cannot hold as much water vapor as warmer air. Antarctica is also dominated by conditions that limit moisture reaching the high interior. The result is an enormous polar desert: cold enough to preserve ice, yet too dry to receive much new precipitation.

Some places are even more striking. The McMurdo Dry Valleys sit in a precipitation shadow created by the Transantarctic Mountains. NASA describes these largely ice-free valleys as among Earth’s coldest and driest environments and studies them as analogues for conditions on Mars.

Desert and tundra are related labels, not simple opposites

The reel contrasts desert with tundra, and the intuition is useful: “desert” highlights aridity, while “tundra” is a biome associated with cold conditions, short growing seasons, permafrost, and low vegetation. Classification systems are not perfectly interchangeable, however. Some polar landscapes can be described through more than one lens, while most of Antarctica’s ice-covered interior lacks the plant community normally associated with tundra.

That is why a school biome chart can create confusion. The chart may group places by climate and vegetation, while the geographic statement “Antarctica is a desert” emphasizes precipitation. The labels answer different questions, and the boundaries vary by scientific classification.

The fact worth remembering

Antarctica is not called a desert because its water disappeared. It is called a desert because almost no new water falls from the sky. The ice is a vast frozen archive built from snowfall that accumulated rather than a sign of a wet present-day climate.

So Laynie was not alone in picturing heat and sand first. The better shortcut is simple: desert means dry. Temperature tells you whether that desert is scorching, temperate, or polar—and Antarctica sits at the coldest end of the category.
